Giants break fourth-quarter tie to beat Vikings
By Dick Sparrer
The Del Mar connection of Jason Campbell and Alex Quesada hooked up for a 20-yard touchdown pass to pull the West Valley College Vikings to a 21-21 tie with the College of the Sequoias (COS) early in the fourth quarter last Saturday night in Visalia.

But as good as things looked for the Vikings just a couple of minutes into the final period, it took just a few minutes for the tide to change.

Actually, it only took 17 seconds. The Giants returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and went on from there to nail a 44-21 conference victory.

A field goal, a touchdown march and a blocked punt helped the Giants turn the tight game into a runaway in the final quarter.

Sequoias had taken an early 6-0 lead in the game, but West Valley came charging back with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Philipe Severe (Cupertino). Brent Maselli (Prospect) kicked the first of his three extra points, and the Vikings were on top 7-6.

The Giants scored twice before intermission to take a 21-7 lead at the half, and that's how it remained until late in the third quarter. Campbell tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Michael Collins, and Maselli converted to cut the lead to 21-14 with 7:39 left in the third period.

West Valley tied the game 2:33 into the fourth quarter on the 20-yard touchdown toss from Campbell to Quesada and the extra point by Maselli. But that just set the stage for the COS fourth-quarter rally.

The Vikings had problems with special teams in the loss to the Giants. Sequoias had the kickoff return for the touchdown and blocked three punts, converting one for a TD. West Valley also missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Mike Giorgianni (Pioneer) recovered a COS fumble for the Vikes, but West Valley lost the football on five turnovers—three turnovers and two fumbles.

West Valley will try to get back on the winning track this week when the Vikings host Foothill on Oct. 11, 3 p.m., in Saratoga.
