As a team, the Prospect girls won't win many cross country dual meets this fall.
Check that—make it any. Prospect doesn't have enough girls to fill out a varsity squad, so winning is out of the question for the Panthers this season.
That's as a team, though. In the individual competition, it's a different story altogether—thanks to sophomore Rebecca Palm.
Palm romped to an individual win last week in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division meet on the Alum Rock Park course when she covered the 2.9-mile distance in 19:36 to finish a full 29 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.
Palm, who finished 25th at the BVAL finals a year ago as just a freshman, couldn't help the Panthers with her individual win, though. Prospect lost 15-50 to both Oak Grove and Santa Teresa.
Westmont came through with a strong showing the same day, beating Gunderson 15-50 and Pioneer 19-47. Kristine Amii was fifth in 21:08, with teammate Jenny Jackson seventh in 21:57 to lead the Warriors on the day.
In boys competition the same day, David Pickins of Westmont was sixth overall in 17:04 to lead the Warriors to a 15-50 win over Gunderson. Westmont lost 23-33 to Pioneer, though.
Prospect lost 25-36 to Oak Grove and 18-47 to Prospect, but Scott Smith came through with a solid effort for the Panthers, finishing eighth in 17:28.
In West Valley Division competition the same day, the Del Mar boys split a pair of decisions, beating Andrew Hill 24-31 but losing 21-34 to Yerba Buena. Nick Clinton led the Del Mar efforts, finishing eighth in 18:08.
The Del Mar girls ran an incomplete team.
