Saratoga ushers in new trustees

The Saratoga Union School District will not hold elections for its board seats this year. There were three seats open for the new term, and only three candidates filed for the positions. Cathy Thurmond, John Poo and Michael Gipe will be replacing outgoing trustees Bonnie Yamaoka, Stephanie Petrossi and Aileen Kao.


Saratoga High opens library

Saratoga High School will hold a grand opening for its new library on Oct. 23 from 5 to 6 p.m. After the opening, author and speaker Michael Riera will present a lecture for parents on how to be more effective in their parenting techniques. The Saratoga High School and Redwood Middle School PTSA groups are sponsoring the free event.


Local students off to SMU

Three Saratoga residents have started classes at Southern Methodist University, along with 1,380 other first-year students. Ashley Munro, Allen Strickland and Ashley Whisnant are now currently attending the private university in Texas.


Students score big in math

Saratoga High School ninth-graders David Lee and Darren Yin took first place at the Mathcounts National Competition in Chicago this summer, beating 56 teams from around the country. Yin also placed sixth in the individual competition.

Redwood Middle School students Mitra Lohrasbpour, Jonathan Hsieh, Leonard Wei and Gary Chang were all recognized for helping the competitors.
