Hazardous waste collection event
Santa Clara County will hold a household hazardous waste collection event Oct. 26 in Lot 1 at West Valley College.
The event is an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of their unwanted household products. Residents must make an appointment to drop off their items by calling 408.299.7300.
Fire station issue goes to council
The city council Oct. 16 held a public hearing on the city's vacation of a public right-of-way along George Whalen Way between the Saratoga Fire District fire station and the post office, and then continued the hearing to Nov. 6.
The vacation of the alley would allow the fire district to build a new station on its own half of the alley. However, as the district's plans to build a station were rejected by the planning commission Oct. 9 and appealed by the fire district Oct. 10, the council will not make a decision on the vacation until it has made a decision on the appeal, also scheduled for Nov. 6.
Council considers Farwell Ave. curb
The city council expressed support Oct. 16 for an amendment to the city's motor vehicle and traffic code to allow no-parking zones to be identified by either red curbs or signs, rather than requiring both.
The amendment would make possible the public safety commission's recommendation that an area of no parking on Farwell Avenue be posted with signs rather than be red-curbed, as it is now.
The council is scheduled to make a final decision on the amendment Nov. 6. If it approves the amendment, the council must wait 30 days from then before considering removing the Farwell Avenue red curb and having a no-parking sign installed there instead.
City to decide on heritage lane
The city council will make a final decision Nov. 6 about designating Saratoga's portion of Austin Way, one of the only remaining turn-of-the-century brick roads in the county, a heritage lane. The designation would not include additional city oversight on private property adjacent to the street.
