SJ Hall of Fame
Five local sports heroes are designated for induction into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame when ceremonies are held Nov. 13 on the floor of the Compaq Center in San Jose. Football star Craig Morton, basketball sensation Dennis Awtrey, Olympic hammer thrower Ed Burke, women's golf pioneer Betty Hicks and baseball superstar Carney Lansford are the '02 inductees.
The organization will also honor five others as amateur athletes of the year. High school athletes Trent Edwards (Los Gatos football) and Adrienne Herbst (Santa Teresa girls soccer), college athletes Logan Tom (Stanford women's volleyball) and Jeremy Guthrie (Stanford baseball) and special Olympian Lindsay Mibach (Lynbrook) will be presented awards.
The eighth annual induction ceremony will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner and awards presentation at 7 p.m. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Silicon Valley Region of Special Olympics.

Golf tournament
The Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament, a fundraising event for the Santa Clara University baseball team, will be held Nov. 1 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.
The best ball scramble tournament will begin with an11:30 a.m. shotgun start, following a 9 a.m. registration. The $230 entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, tee prizes, lunch, dinner and a foursome photo. The cost is $60 for dinner only.

Swim program
A masters swimming program for those age 19 and older is offered Monday through Thursday, 78 p.m., at the Los Gatos High School pool. The program features regular structured workouts for swimmers of all ability levels. The cost is $40 per month. Little League sign-ups
The Saratoga Little League will hold sign-ups for the 2003 season on Nov. 13 and 14, 79 p.m., and Nov. 16, 9 a.m.noon, in the cafeteria at Argonaut School.
The league is open to boys and girls ages 512 (t-ball through major divisions), and there will also be sign-ups for Pony League (ages 1314). Players must bring a birth certificate and a recent utility or telephone bill as proof of current residence.

Lamble wins
Kelly Lamble, 11, finished first in her division at the Fremont Junior Tennis Championships, played Oct. 56 and 1213 at the Fremont Tennis Center. Lamble is a student at Redwood Middle School.
Softball sign-ups

Volleyball tryouts
The Point Break Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for the 2003 season in November at Saratoga High School.
The club, under the direction of Westmont girls coach Peter Kim, will hold tryouts on Nov. 16, 79 p.m., for girls in the 12-and-under, 13-and-under and 14-and-under divisions, and on Nov. 17, 79 p.m., for girls in the 15-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under divisions.
There is a onetime tryout fee of $25, but players can try out for multiple teams. Players must arrive an hour before tryouts with insurance, medical and Social Security information, and there will be a short parents meeting before each tryout.

Volleyball tryouts
The Quicksilver Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for girls ages 1318 on Nov. 3 and 10 at San José City College.
Tryouts are slated for Nov. 3, 1:303:30 p.m., for girls ages 13 and 14; Nov. 10, 911 a.m., for girls ages 15 and 16; and Nov. 10, noon2 p.m., for girls ages 1718. Players should arrive early to sign forms, and there will be a parents meeting at each tryout. The fee is $20 per player.

Softball tryouts
The Strikkers, a girls softball 16-and-under traveling team, will hold tryouts for the 2003 summer season on Nov. 17 and 24 at Oak Grove High School in San Jose. Pitchers and catchers should report at 11 a.m. and position players at noon. For more information, call Ernie Garcia at 408.281.7855.

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF) is accepting grant applications from youth organizations and schools interested in purchasing new sports equipment.
