It was a tough weekend for local teams from the Blossom Valley Athletic League's Santa Teresa Division. Westmont lost a 25-23 heartbreaker to Leland, and Prospect and Del Mar were each pounded—the Panthers losing 29-0 to Silver Creek, and the Dons falling 46-7 to Independence.
The Warriors slipped to 5-2 for the year and to 2-1 in division play when they were upset by the Chargers last Saturday afternoon at Leland. The Chargers scored in the final minute to pull out the come-from-behind 25-23 victory.
The Leland win, combined with the Silver Creek and Independence victories, creates a real logjam at the head of the heap in the Santa Teresa Division. The Raiders lead the pack with a 3-0 record, but the 76ers, Warriors and Chargers are close behind with just a loss each.
Westmont will try to break up that pack a bit when the Warriors hit the road to visit Independence on Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. The 76ers are 5-2 for the year and 3-1 in the division.
Independence is coming off a lopsided 46-7 win over Del Mar. The loss dropped Del Mar to 0-4 in the division and to 0-7 for the year. The Dons will try to get on the winning track when they host Pioneer on Nov. 2, 1:30 p.m., in a non-league game.
Silver Creek, meanwhile, remains atop the pack after blanking Prospect 29-0 last Friday afternoon. The Panthers, 2-5 for the year and 1-3 in league play, can also play a role in breaking up the pack at the top of the standings this week. Prospect will host Leland on Nov. 2, 1:30 p.m.
Ivan Biondic carried 11 times for 59 yards and also completed 3 of 7 passes for 87 yards, but the Panthers were shut out by the Raiders.
Biondic, who broke loose for a 24-yard run in the game, hit Kyilo Hulton with a 67-yard pass in the game, but the Panthers couldn't push the ball into the end zone. The quarterback also completed a couple of 8-yard passes for Joey Puccinelli and Steven Kong.
Jeremy Nuia was the workhorse for the Panthers, carrying 18 times for 71 yards. He had a 12-yard run for his long gainer of the day. Kong supported with 11 carries for 34 yards, including a 10-yard run.
Andrew Shouse was the tackling leader for the Panthers with 12 stops. Austin Baumgarten and Tramell Staten were in on seven apiece, and Biondic added five. Mark Draper sacked the Silver Creek quarterback.
