Aegis Gallery's show is digital

"Explorations," an installation of digital photography by Los Gatan Tom Keenan, is up through Nov. 24 at Aegis Gallery of Fine Art in Saratoga.

Keenan has been involved in photography since his elementary school days. He began taking his hobby more seriously in the 1990s, when people began asking for copies of prints he had made just for fun. He later began exhibiting at galleries, restaurants, offices and other venues. Among his favorite photographers are Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Christopher Burkett and Jerry Uelsmann.

An artist's reception, with refreshments, takes place Nov. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. Aegis Gallery of Fine Art is at 14351 Big Basin Way. Call 408.867.0171 or visit www.aegisgallery.com for gallery hours or more information.

Rec leads day trip on Sierra Railroad

The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations for a Nov. 7 day trip to Oakdale. The highlight is a ride on the Sierra Railroad's Golden Sunset Train, which was founded in 1897.

The train trip will take participants south of Highway 108, where they will see miles of foothills and rangeland unspoiled by urban development. The trip also includes a three-course lunch in restored railroad cars and a visit to the Hershey's Chocolate Visitor's Center.

The trip, open to people of all ages, runs from 8:45 a.m. to approximately 5:30 p.m. Good walking shoes and layered clothes are recommended. The cost is $94 per person. For reservations, call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.

'Bay Area Wild' author to speak

Among the events it offers to the community, REI Saratoga has invited nature photographer Michael Sewell to give a slide presentation on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. The presentation will be on Bay Area Wild, a book that celebrates the Bay Area's wild heritage. Sewell collaborated on the book with fellow photographer Galen Rowell.

The event is free and open to the public. REI Saratoga is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For additional information, call 408.871.8765.
