It's a tale that's been told countless times: A desperate soul hungry for power makes a deal with Satan—or some other evil figure—and ends up regretting it. In November, Opera San José will present the original cautionary tale about flimsy bargains, Faust, the dark German fable that was made into an opera by Charles Gounod in 1859.
As with every Opera San José production, each role will be shared by two performers. Tenors Adam Flowers and Jonathan Hodel will alternate as the title character. Also in the Faust cast are company sopranos Julie Makerov and Sandra Rubalcava, who will alternate as Faust's lover, Marguérite. Bass Kirk Eichelberger and bass-baritone Jesse Merlin will alternate as Mephistopheles. Robert Wood, who conducted Opera San José's production of Manon, will again serve as conductor. Gounod's Faust is directed by David Cox, who directed Eugene Oñegin for Opera San José in 1999.
Faust will be performed in French with English titles at the Montgomery Theater, Market and San Carlos streets, San Jose. Fourteen performances are scheduled from Nov. 9 to Dec. 1. Tickets are $40$58. For more information, call 408.437.4450 or visit www.operasj.org.
