Thomas "Tom" and Wilma "Wil" Morrison, who have lived in Saratoga since 1962, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 28. They were married in 1952 at the Piedmont home of Wil's mother, Lillian Bradley.
Tom worked as a personnel manager with PG&E for more than 25 years, retiring in 1981. He spent the early part of his retirement traveling each week to his San Juan Bautista orchard, where he raised pears and apples. When his two sons were young, he also served as a leader for their Boy Scout troop.
Wil was a stay-at-home mother for the couple's four children and was active in the Oak Street School PTA, serving as president at one point. When her children grew older, she took courses at West Valley College and volunteered for various Saratoga organizations, including the Friends of the Library and the Library Commission. She is also a member of the American Association of University Women and the Saratoga Foothill Club.
"If you asked them what their secret is to staying married for 50 years, they would probably say that it's because of the commitment they made to one another, the love they have for their family, giving each other 'space,' having a sense of humor and the pleasure of making it to 'early-bird specials,' " reveals daughter Carolyn Cocanour, who says she and her siblings plan to surprise their parents with a newspaper recognition of their 50th anniversary.
Celebrating the Morrisons' anniversary with them recently were their sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Gale Morrison of Saratoga and Brad and RoseAnn Morrison of Folsom; daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and Alex Lambertson of Folsom and Carolyn and Ron Cocanour of San Jose; and grandchildren Stephanie, Christie, Melissa and Spencer Morrison, and Lauren and Brooks Lambertson and Breanna Cocanour.
