Big wins for two state propositions
Voters approved state bond measure Proposition 47 on Nov. 5 by a 62.5 percent vote (191,672 votes). There were 115,115 votes (37.5 percent) in opposition. Proposition 47 involves the sale of $13,050,000,000 in general obligation bonds for construction and renovation of K-12 schools, community colleges and universities.
State Proposition 49, which would increase funding for programs before and after school and permanently slate general funds to be used for such programs, was approved with a 55 percent "yes" vote (166,751 votes), with 136,501 (45 percent) opposed.
Saratoga teachers make 'Who's Who'
Fourteen Saratoga teachers made the grade this year, being nominated by former students for Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2002.
High school or college students who make the list of Who's Who Among American High School Students or The National Dean's List are allowed to nominate one teacher who positively influenced their lives.
Nominated teachers include: Larry Arnerich of Prospect High School, Marilyn Arnerich of Prospect, Michael Boitz of Saratoga High School, Rebecca Cisneros of West Valley College, Todd Kenneth Dwyer of Saratoga High, Ronald James Garcia of Prospect, Georgiana Lee Hays of Prospect, Barbara Ann Kirkland of Sacred Heart School, Leon John Nikas of Prospect, Robert Michael Scarola of Redwood Middle School, Fiona Sohns of West Valley College, Michael Tyler of St. Andrew's School and Gina Therese Zolezzi of Saratoga High.
