Funds are needed to furnish library

As part of the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries' campaign to raise funds toward the purchase of chairs, tables and other furniture, the group is calling on community members for donations in exchange for having a personal or business name laser-engraved on a 4-by-8-inch brick or 12-by-12-inch tile to be placed on the cafe patio or community room patio, respectively. Deadline for the brick engravement has passed, but for donations of $1,000 or more, individuals and businesses can still have their names put on a tile by Nov. 20. Contact Jan at 408.867.2836 for more information.

Individuals who contribute $5,000 or more by Nov. 30 will see their names on a bronze plaque displayed in the lobby of the new library. For more information, call 408.867.3445.

Saratoga observes national weeks

The city noted at the Nov. 6 council meeting that Nov. 1723 is "National Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week" and Nov. 2430 is "National Family Week."

During National Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week, the Emergency Housing Consortium will engrave the names of those who have died on the streets of Santa Clara County on an obelisk at its main shelter. Estimates on the number of homeless people in the county range from 15,000 to 22,000 annually.

During the council meeting, the city also recognized National Family Week, last observed by the city in 2000. The statement by the city says that "the quality of our community life begins within the homes of individual families." Since 1970, the week in which Thanksgiving falls has been recognized as National Family Week.

Literacy program is recognized

California Literacy Inc. recently named the Santa Clara County Library's Vision Literacy program "outstanding program of the year" from among 110 literacy providers. The program offers free tutorials to adults, teaching them basic reading, writing and math skills and other life skills, such as writing checks, applying for loans and voting. Vision Literacy created a new logo, seven-minute informational video, website and brochure this past year.
