Think of it as a coming out party. The brand-new Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley is making its debut on Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose. The concert, the first of a four-performance season, is appropriately called "Debut Concert."
David Loebel, music director and conductor of the Memphis Symphony, is guest conductor for a program that includes Stravinsky's Petrushka, Burlesque in Four Tableaux, Corigliano's Promenade Overture and Dvorák's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor ("New World Symphony").
Loebel has appeared as a guest conductor with symphonies throughout the country and in Australia, Canada and Japan. He is a recipient of the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Award, given to American conductors considered to be on the threshold of major careers.
The new symphony, which includes many musicians from the now-defunct San Jose Symphony, was created by Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley under the umbrella of San Jose Silicon Valley Great Performances.
Additional concerts are scheduled for March 1, with guest conductor Yasuo Shinozaki; April 26, with guest conductor Paul Polivnick; and June 7, with conductor Patrick Flynn.
