Steinway Society makes music; quilt museum celebrates
By Estelle Pagnoux
The Steinway Society is making good on its mission to promote excellence in piano performance by hosting an engagement with Japanese pianist Mari Kodama on Nov. 17.

Kodama will perform Beethoven's Opus 49, No. 1, Opus 110 and Opus 111 at Le Petit Trianon Theatre in the second show of the society's six-concert 200203 season. The event includes refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist after the concert.

Formed by two longtime San Jose residents and friends, the Steinway Society of the Bay Area was born nine years ago when David Dumont and Billye Erickson read about an event produced by the Atlanta Steinway Society. Assuming there was already a San Francisco chapter, the two friends were surprised to learn that no such organization existed on the West Coast. Now the society welcomes its ninth season of bringing world-class pianists to San Jose by way of Le Petit Trianon Theatre, which houses the society's Steinway Model B at 72 N. First St. in downtown San Jose.

For tickets and information, call the Steinway Society at 408.246.4200 or visit www.steinwaythebayarea.com. Tickets are $25 and $15 for students and seniors.

Quilt Museum
Quilt museum is 25

The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles celebrates its 25th anniversary with a party on Nov. 17 to kick off a two-month exhibit that reflects its past quarter century.

"25/Twenty-Five: An Anniversary Celebration" showcases 25 pieces from the museum's permanent collection, showing off the diversity of its 25 years of acquisitions. The museum was the first in the United States to show quilts and textiles exclusively, and the exhibit highlights its past 21/2 decades.

The museum has worked to educate the public about their history and the art and craft of quilting through lectures, workshops and demonstrations. As the museum looks forward, it will examine textiles from around the world, both traditional and contemporary styles.

The anniversary reception at the museum, scheduled for Nov. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The museum is located at 110 Paseo de San Antonio in downtown San Jose and is open 10 a.m.5 p.m. TuesdaySunday. It is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. General admission is $4, $3 for seniors and students and free for children under the age of 13. For more information, call 408.971.0323 or visit www.sjquiltmuseum.org.
