Chu awarded for Internet program

Allan Chu, a senior at Saratoga High School, was recently named as an individual winner of the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Chu was one of three winners for the Western Regional Division, receiving a $3,000 scholarship for his project, which created a new data compression algorithm for the Internet.

Chu will now be able to compete in the national competition next month, which will include winners from all six regions and have a grand scholarship prize of $100,000.


'Cheaper by the Dozen' at WVC

The West Valley College theater arts department is putting on the production Cheaper by the Dozen. The play, dramatized by Christopher Sergel and based on the book by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, is a family comedy set in the 1920s.

Performances will be held at the campus theater, running on Nov. 22, 23, 29 and 30 and Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. each day. Matinees will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 8. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for students with ID, seniors 65 and over, and children.

Argonaut looking for volunteers

Argonaut Elementary School is seeking parents to volunteer for first- through third-grade story time at the school library. Parents may sign up for one or multiple reading sessions.
