A native of New Haven, Conn., Popylisen served in the Pacific theater with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Adelphi University. He retired in 1989 after 26 years of employment with Lockheed in Sunnyvale. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include wife Joan Popylisen of Saratoga; sons Daniel Popylisen Jr. of San Jose and John Popylisen of San Jose; daughters Anne Greene of Saratoga and Mary Popylisen of Oakland; and seven grandchildren.
