Saratogans can join in the merrymaking as downtown Saratoga fills with decorations, live music, carolers and horse-drawn carriages during the Village's second annual Holiday Open House on Nov. 29.
The open house runs from 6 to 9 p.m., but before that residents can witness the city's first tree-lighting ceremony at Blaney Plaza, which is to take place at 5:30 p.m.
This year, the Chamber of Commerce decided to partner up with village merchants by helping to pay for some of the expenses of the open house and by publicizing the event. Other participants include the Saratoga Rotary Club and the Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council.
In addition to holiday shopping, residents who come downtown can take advantage of the Saratoga Historical Museum's extended evening hours that day. Parents can also bring their children in to have their pictures taken with Father Christmas.
"We have so many things going on this year," said Donna Collins, owner of Henrietta Hens, who has organized the event both years. More than one Santa Claus will be seen walking up and down the street, she said, and some merchants will have musicians performing outside their businesses.
In addition, the horse and carriage ride will last approximately 15 minutes and cost $5 per person, said Kristin Davis, executive director for the Chamber.
Just across the street from the museum, the Saratoga Federated Church will be hosting a free wreath-making party from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Participants can make a wreath, decorate ornaments and view a live nativity scene.
Though the weather is supposed to be clear this weekend, Collins suggests bundling up in warm clothes since participants will be spending some time outdoors. Last year, Collins recalls, the sidewalks were packed with people.
"It's going to be really hopping," she said.
