The candidates who came out on top in the city council race earlier this month received widespread support from the community, according to figures released by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.

Of the city's 23 precincts, 22 had the same three candidates who won overall (the slate of Nick Streit, Kathleen King and Norman Kline) as their top three finishers. Only voters in the West Valley Fire Station area had Neil Malhotra edging Kline out for the third spot by five votes.

As the lone incumbent, Streit led the way in all but four of the polling places. He placed second behind King by voters at Saratoga Civic Center (286 votes to 293), Immanuel Lutheran Church (269 to 273) and the West Valley Fire Station (136 to 147). Streit also came in behind Kline and King at West Hope Presbyterian Church. Additionally, Streit managed to retain his lead over King by three votes at two other polling places.

Malhotra, who finished fourth overall, spent most of the campaigning season in New York, where he was training for his job as a finance analyst. Nevertheless, he had a top-three finish in the West Valley Fire Station precinct, making him the only candidate running as an independent to do so.

Andrew Barnes, who spent the most money on his campaign, finished fifth overall, though the race between him and Malhotra proved to be close. Overall standings as of Nov. 20 had Malhotra with 14.2 percent of the votes and Barnes with 13.6. But Malhotra fell behind Barnes in eight of the precincts, two of which put Barnes in front of Malhotra by only one vote. With 154 votes each, the two candidates tied at Coldwell Banker.

Shelley Williams, who came in last overall and was the only candidate to not break the double-digit threshold for percentage of votes cast in their favor, did beat out Malhotra and Barnes among voters who cast their ballots at the Rodenberg residence on Walbrook Drive by placing fourth.

The average voter turnout for all 23 precincts was 53.1 percent. St. Michael the Archangel Serbian Orthodox Church had the highest turnout (59.4 percent), and West Valley Fire Station saw the lowest turnout (44.7 percent).

Precinct figures listed here were updated Nov. 19. The registrar's office has until the end of the month to verify all the votes.
