Montalvo gallery goes 'fantastical'

"Fantastical Topographies" is the title of the latest exhibit to fill the Montalvo Gallery, located at 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. The exhibit, which runs through Jan. 26, features mixed-media sculptures by Ulrike Palmbach and Genevieve Quick.

Both artists live and work in San Francisco. Palmbach, a native of Germany, creates enigmatic objects from commonplace materials.

Quick, originally from Michigan, creates more identifiable works of art, including craggy mountain sculptures topped with grass and trees that resemble miniature worlds, but devoid of human or animal life.

Montalvo Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 408.961.5813.

Rec department going to 'Cirque'

The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations now for a bus trip to see Cirque du Soleil's new show, Varekai, on Jan. 22 in downtown San Jose. The bus leaves the Saratoga Recreation Department at 7 p.m. and returns at approximately 11 p.m. Varekai, which takes place under the Cirque's Grand Chapiteau tent, is described as "a furious and flamboyant celebration" and combines ancient circus traditions with never-before-seen acrobatic stunts.

Early reservations are recommended, as space is limited. The cost is $90 for adults and $84 for students and senior citizens. For more information, call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.
