Cross country teams are tops this season at Redwood
By Dick Sparrer
It was a successful fall season for the sports teams at Redwood Middle School in Saratoga. But no Redwood squad enjoyed as much success in 2002 as the school's cross country team.

Redwood ran to a league championship in the seventh grade boys division, and the locals were second in sixth and eighth grade girls competition.

Katie Nast, Katrin Cooper and Cris Clark were individual champions for Redwood.

Nast raced to a victory in the sixth grade girls race and Cooper won the seventh grade girls division.

Clark was the champ in the seventh grade boys division, with teammate Ryan Hinshaw a close second. Persia Saffie was fourth in the race for eighth grade girls.

Soccer

Aleks Aleksic was the leading scorer and Lisa Brenner and Megan Finley were named the co-most valuable players for the Redwood eighth grade girls soccer team, which finished third in league play with a solid 8-2 season record.

Defender Diana Lopez was selected as the most improved player on the squad.

"The team was exciting to watch and a treat to coach," said Steven Snyder, who led the girls to a second-place league finish as seventh graders. "It was a strong group and a real cohesive team."

The Redwood seventh grade girls soccer team posted a 4-6 record in the 2002 season.

"A large number of girls came out to play and added to the team's success," said coach Marie Bordeleau. "We had many competitive games."

The Redwood sixth grade girls soccer team dominated all four of the games they played on the road to a 4-0 season record.

"They had dominating performances in all four of their wins," said Redwood athletic director Brian Senior.

Volleyball

Redwood finished third in eighth grade boys volleyball in both A and B level competition. The A team, 6-4 for the year, lost to C.T. English in the league semifinals and the B team, 4-4 overall, lost to Dartmouth.

Mitchell Raisch was selected as the eighth grade most valuable player. Ishan Nagpal won the most improved player award, Bennett Rothenberg was picked as the best team player and Rohit D'Costa won the coach's award.

In sixth/seventh-grade boys volleyball, the A team posted a 4-5 record for the year and the B team finished at 6-3 and earned a playoff berth.

The B's opened the league tournament with a win over Ida Price before losing to Castro in the finals to wind up in second place overall.

Team members included Kayvon Barisalom, Jack Allen, Cullen Campbell, Kevin Carlton, Jason Chun, Andy Cole, Matt Fazio, Andrew Francis, Hoffman Hibbett, Myles Hornberger, Kent Johnson, Takehiro Kurosawa, Shawyon Malek, Nick McConnell, Alan Menezes, Blake Paisley, Matt Spencer and Mike Vetrone.
