Chorales, chamber groups keep holiday notes bright
By Estelle Pagnoux
Need a little lift this holiday season? Check out any of these seasonal treats from the chorales, orchestras and chamber groups offering concerts that will light up any dispirited mood.

The Santa Clara Chorale presents "Comfort & Joy" on Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. at Mission Santa Clara. Under the direction of new music director Tom Colohan, the chorale will sing holiday favorites, including "The First Noel" and "Jolly Ol' Saint Nick," as well as several Hanukkah songs and Spanish renditions of familiar holiday songs. Accompanied by an organ and traditional brass instruments, the 85 members will mark the organization's 40th anniversary with the annual holiday show.

Tickets are $12 for seniors and students and $18 for general admission. Call 408.225.8276 or visit www.scc.org for more information.

West Valley

The West Valley College Masterworks Chorale is joined by the Saratoga High School Women's Ensemble for "Sounds of the Season" on Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Saratoga Presbyterian Church, 20455 Herriman Ave. in Saratoga.

Traditional winter music will be performed, including "Carol of the Bells" and selections from Handel's "Messiah," accompanied by a piano, organ, hand bells and percussion.

Tickets can be purchased at the door; the cost is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.

West Valley's Robert Cornejo

'You-Sing-It Messiah'

If listening isn't quite enough and you're in the mood to join in the singing, the San Jose Symphonic Choir has good news. The group is back for its 23rd year of "You-Sing-It Messiah" on Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose.

More than 1,000 people typically join Music Director Leroy Kromm and his 120-member choir for a group rendition of Handel's Messiah. The choir dresses in concert gowns and tuxedos and sits among the audience with a full orchestra framed by red poinsettias on the stage.

Maestro Kromm directs the orchestra as well as the audience, where Santa hats and other holiday accoutrements can be spotted throughout the crowd. "You-Sing-It Messiah" is fun for the whole family. All parts are sung by the group, including solos. Scores can be purchased at the show.

Tickets are $18 for general admission, and group rates are available. Call 408.246.1160 for tickets. Visit www.sanjosesymphonicchoir.org for more information.

SJSU Chorale, Concert Choir

The San José State University Chorale and Concert Choir performs its 27th annual scholarship concerts Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. at Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, located at 90 S. Market St. in downtown San Jose.

Choral-orchestra works will be performed with the Mission Chamber Orchestra. SJSU's flute choir, Tutti Flutti, also will perform. New arrangements of familiar holiday favorites will be performed, as well as Mendelssohn's double-choir motet "Heilig," a Renaissance gem and "O Magnum Mysterium."

Ticket prices range from $15 to $50. Email chorale@email.sjsu.edu or call 408.924.4332 for more information.
