Not content to stop at the diamond anniversary mark, Saratogans Harwood and Frances Kolsky celebrated their 60th year of marriage—their emerald anniversary—on Nov. 25 with family members and friends at a party hosted by their son Franklin Kolsky of Kayenta, Utah.
The couple first met as students at the University of Kansas, although their families had known each other for much longer. Both were originally from the same Czechoslovakian immigrant settlement in western Kansas.
The Kolskys were married in 1942. Harwood was then sent to the Pacific Theater and other locations with the U.S. Army, with whom he served until the conclusion of World War II.
Harwood is a retired professor of computer engineering at UC-Santa Cruz. He also was employed by IBM for 29 years, first in New York and then in the Bay Area. Frances worked as a high school teacher in Kansas and is a member of the Saratoga Foothill Club. Both are members of the Saratoga Federated Church.
"Love and respect each other sincerely as partners in marriage," they agree is the secret to their long and happy relationship. "Communicate openly, and work hard."
Joining the Kolskys for their 60th anniversary party were their children Barbara Meyers of Fremont, Franklin Kolsky of Utah, Alan Kolsky of Novato and Douglas Kolsky of Aptos, and grandchildren Carol Meyers, Patrick Kolsky and Lauren Kolsky.
