Waite is named board president

The board of trustees for the Saratoga Union School District elected their new board president Dec. 10. John Waite was chosen to replace Bonnie Yamaoka, with Cindy Ruby elected as clerk and Cathie Thermond as secretary.


PA Philharmonic hosts competition

The Palo Alto Philharmonic is asking for instrumental and vocal submissions for its Concerto Movement Competition. The competition is open to all Bay Area residents who are of school age but have not yet graduated from high school. Submissions must be a five- to 15-minute movement from a concerto or concert piece. Six to eight winners will be selected to perform at Cubberley Auditorium in Palo Alto. Applications are available at http://paphil.ai.sri.com and must be submitted with a tape or CD and $25 by Dec. 31. For more information, contact Geri Actor at geri.actor@attbi.com.


Horner is an Oregon grad

Saratoga resident Megan Horner recently earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon. Horner, a journalism major with an emphasis in public relations, was one of 750 students to be a fall graduate.


Saratoga poets are recognized

Saratoga High School senior Teresa Lee has received a special merit award from the Living Poets Society for her poem "Exit." Senior Dara Khan was awarded an honorable mention for his poem "Crushed by November" from the Poetry Society of Virginia. The Canadian literary journal Tickled by Thunder recently published poems by Saratoga grad Joyce Lee, senior Lauren Young and junior Kalvin Wang. Creative writing teacher Judith Sutton was recently awarded the 2002 Poet of the Year Award from the National Authors Registry and Verses Magazine for her poetry collection Prism. The collection has been accepted for publication by Cader Publishing, Ltd. and will be released in spring 2003.
