Saratoga's Ashburn shoots the lights out

Who ever said that the term "shooting the lights out" is just an expression? Try to convince Los Gatos basketball coach Jim Marino of that this week.

Marino's Wildcats and the Los Gatos Lions Club were co-hosts for the annual Lions Club Wildcat Shootout last week, and after three days of outstanding basketball, there were no lights left in the Los Gatos gym.

OK, maybe it was a power thing and not the six three-pointers and 32 points by Saratoga's Matt Ashburn in the early rounds, but whatever the reason, the finals had to be shifted from Los Gatos to Pioneer for the championship and third-place games on Saturday night.

"We had no power," said Marino, whose club's consolation championship against Armijo had to be cancelled. But Live Oak certainly did. The Acorns, who opened with wins over Armijo (40-38) and Leigh (55-40), stormed past Saratoga 58-46 on Saturday night to win the tournament championship.

Joel Wright sparked the Acorns to the tourney championship and was named the tournament's most valuable player for his efforts. Teammate Miles Curley joined him on the all-tourney team along with Ashburn and Aron Mitsunaga of Saratoga, Marcus Morgan and Dan Wendt of Leigh, Ceylon Elgin-Taylor of Pioneer and Chris Clock of Los Gatos.

Ashburn finished the tournament with 44 points and eight three-pointers to lead all Saratoga scorers.

The senior guard pumped in 12 points in the title game against Live Oak, but the Falcons dropped the 58-46 nod. Irvin Chien supported with eight points, and Frank Wallace and Lawrence Hui added seven apiece. Dan Wallace hit six, Mitsunaga four and David Kau two.

The Falcons had earned their place in the finals with a thrilling 59-57 overtime win over Pioneer. Ashburn poured in 20 points, including a couple of threes, to lead all Saratoga scorers. F. Wallace chipped in with 14 points, and Mitsunaga finished in double digits with 11. Hui added seven points, Nima Rad popped a pair of threes to end with six and Chien hit a free throw.

Saratoga opened the tourney with an impressive 57-52 win over Los Gatos. Ashburn canned four threes to finished with 12 points, but it was Mitsunaga leading all scorers with 13 points. Greg Van Hoesen joined the two in double figures with 11 points.
