Saratoga's Belomy named soph of the year
By Dick Sparrer
Los Gatos didn't win the field hockey championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL) this past fall.

But the Wildcats must have been pretty good—after all, they were the Central Coast Section (CCS) champions.

Los Gatos defeated St. Francis to take that CCS title, but it was the Lancers who finished atop the pack in the Mt. Hamilton Division. So it comes as little surprise that St. Francis took top honors on the all-league squad with Nicole Ng winning the most valuable player award and Kathy Lincoln claiming coach of the year honors.

Still, the Wildcats did all right.

Senior Jenny Dixon topped a list of six Wildcats to win spots on the 2002 all-league team in the division.

Dixon and Prospect's Brooke Madsen, both mids, were named co-seniors of the year on the all-league squad.

Senior back Annie Smith and junior forwards Alison Reyes and Sara Yuki were Cats named to the all-league first team, and senior halfbacks Tiffany Baiardo and Merin Clark won second-team honors.

Prospect senior mid Stephanie Nichols was an all-league first team pick and teammates Christie O'Hara, a senior mid, and Rachel Gagliasso, a senior goalie, won spots on the second team.

Lynbrook senior forward Clare Johnson was an all-league first team selected, with senior mid Candice Ho and junior halfback Emily Chan on the second team.

Leigh dominated the honors list in the Santa Teresa Division, with senior center mid Jamie Nance winning the most valuable player award and twin head coaches Kelli and Karin Mirassou sharing the coach of the year award.

Saratoga center-mid Gwen Belomy was picked the sophomore of the year. Saratoga junior mid Allison Dunn won an all-league first team berth, with teammates Gina Cicerone, a senior back, and Chrissy Falk, a senior forward, claiming second-team honors.

In the BVAL's West Valley Division, Westmont dominated the all-league selections with senior Jennifer Chaney heading the list. The center-mid was named the division's most valuable player after a sensational senior season.

Joining Chaney on the special honors' list was teammate Lisa Parola, who was tabbed the divisions' sophomore of the year.

Winning first-team all-league honors for the Warriors, along with Chaney and Parola, were junior mid Lesley Makishima and senior back Victoria Alexander.

Senior back Shelby Chapman and sophomore back Michelle McLellan won positions on the all-league second team.

Water polo

Kristin Barnes and Andrea Evans of Saratoga each earned positions on the all-league girls water polo team in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL).

Volleyball

Meggie Muyot of the league champion Milpitas Trojans was named the most valuable player, but Saratoga and Lynbrook each managed to place two players on the all-league first team in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Sarah Nguyen and Bryte Nielson of Saratoga and Karelyn Cleaveland and Jessica Buffum of Lynbrook were picked to the division's dream team.
