It wasn't the first goal of the tournament for Jason Kearns of the Demons—but it sure was the biggest.

Kearns' ninth goal of the tourney came on a breakaway in the third minute of sudden death overtime to lift the Demons to a 3-2 win over the Wildcats in the AYSO Region 27 tournament championship game.

The overtime win was the fourth of the day for the Demons and clinched the under-12 championship for the Saratoga boys.

"Winning all four games and winning the tournament ended a great season and a magical day for the players, the coaches and their families," said coach Jim Renalds. "The boys earned every win, and we are so proud of their spirit and commitment to the team."

Kearns and teammate Gibran Meza were named the co-most valuable players of the tournament. Kearns finished the day with the nine goals and Meza knocked in five goals.

The Demons and Wildcats, both Saratoga AYSO teams, opened the 12-team tournament with three wins apiece to move into the title game.

The Wildcats, who had beaten the Demons 5-2 during the regular season, took the early lead when Casey Farmer scored on a breakaway, but the Demons tied it when Kearns scored off an assist from Allen VanDyke.

The clubs were locked in a 1-1 tie at the half, but Farmer snapped the tie with his second goal of the game. Meza later scored off an Alec Wilde pass to tie the game and send it into overtime. That set the stage for Kearns' game-winning goal.

Arjun Dutta was a standout at goalkeeper for the Demons in the championship game and throughout the tournament. He allowed just four goals in four games.

The Wildcats had finished first in the regular season standings in Saratoga with the Cheetahs second and the Demons third. All three teams advanced to the regional tournament along with teams from Cupertino, Prunedale and West San Jose.
