Schools to get almost $10 million

Saratoga and Los Gatos high schools are set to receive nearly $10 million from the state as a result of the Nov. 5 approval of the education facilities bond Proposition 47.

The $9.7 million in matching funds approved for the Los GatosSaratoga Joint Union High School District will be used for modernization work on both campuses.

Saratoga High will receive $4.3 million and Los Gatos High will be given $5.4 million. Multiple projects are slated to benefit from this education bond, as outlined by the building implementation plan developed by the district in 1998.

Proposition 47 will provide $13.05 billion statewide for new construction of school structures, modernization of facilities and general upgrades of kindergartens through public university sites.

Library lines to be installed

Following bids from five different companies to install telephone and cable lines in the new library, the city awarded a contract to Communications Installation Services (CIS), which submitted the lowest bid package at $79,926. Because the CIS bid was well below the initial cost estimate of $140,000 for such work, there were few things to discuss at the special meeting held Dec. 26 to award the contract. The city council voted 4-0—with Councilwoman Kathleen King absent—to award the contract to CIS. The council also granted city staff permission to execute any change orders to the contract up to 10 percent, for a total of $87,918.

Pee Wees cheer in the new year

It's basketball season in Saratoga and that means it's time again for the Pee Wee Spirit Camp.

Open to all Saratoga students, the cheer camp provides elementary schoolage students the opportunity to participate in several cheers with Saratoga High School varsity cheerleaders at a basketball game Jan. 31.

The camp is $60, which includes a T-shirt and pompoms for the performance.

Sign-ups will be held Jan. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Jan. 14 from 5:30 to 7:40 p.m. at Saratoga High School.
