Katie Gazlay drilled a pair of goals to lead the Prospect girls soccer team to a
2-0 win over Independence last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL).
Gazlay scored two second-half goals, one off an assist from Randi Gillespie, to break a scoreless tie and lead the Panthers to the victory.
The win helped the Panthers improve to 4-6-1 for the year and to 1-3 in league play.
Prospect had lost a 6-1 decision to Santa Teresa to open the week. Gillespie scored the lone goal for the Panthers.
Prospect was also blanked 3-0 by Leigh last week.
In other Mt. Hamilton Division action, Westmont lost a pair of decisions last week to slip to 0-3 in league play and to 2-7-1 for the year.
The Warriors were shut out 2-0 by Independence, then lost a 3-1 nod to Piedmont Hills. A second-half goal by sophomore midfielder Vanessa Tapia off an assist from freshman forward Brianna Driggs helped the Warriors avoid the shutout.
The Warriors will be gunning for their first league win this week when they host Prospect on Jan. 17, 3:15 p.m. Westmont will visit Del Mar for a non-league game on Jan. 15, 3:15 p.m.
The Saratoga girls, meanwhile, battled Los Altos to a 2-2 tie in a non-league game but then lost 1-0 to Gunn and 2-1 to Cupertino in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL). The Falcons are now 4-5-2 for the year and 0-3 in division play.
Boys soccer
The Saratoga boys were blanked by both Gunn and Santa Clara in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL last week. The Falcons lost 6-0 to the Titans and 3-0 to the Bruins to slip to 0-2-1 in division play and to 3-7-1 for the year.
Tito Barajas knocked in a couple of goals to lead Westmont to a 3-1 win over Silver Creek in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.
The Warriors lost 3-2 to Gunderson later in the week, despite leading 2-0 at the half. Westmont is now 1-1 in league play and 4-3-2 for the year.
Prospect lost 5-1 to Lincoln last week in Santa Teresa Division play. The Panthers are now 0-1 in league and 1-5-1 for the year.
Wrestling
Junior Dean Antolin finished fourth at 189 pounds in the rugged Cupertino Memorial Tournament last week.
The tourney, billed as the "toughest one-day tournament in the state," featured many of the state's top wrestlers.
Antolin finished fourth in his weight class after nailing a fourth at the Lynn Dyche Classic held a couple of weeks earlier at James Lick High School.
Brad Turner was fourth at 152, Ryan Portas was fourth at 275 and Ryan Kennedy was fifth at 171 for the Warriors at the Dyche.
In dual match action last week, Westmont lost a tough 40-32 nod to Independence in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. Vincent Luong pinned at 103 pounds, Scott Pfirfmann won 12-6 at 119, Preston Falbo won 10-8 at 135, Kennedy won 16-0 at 160 and Antolin won 10-8 at 189 to lead the Westmont showing.
The Warriors slipped to 2-1 in the division with the loss, and Independence improved to 3-0.
