There were no second-half goals for the Prospect girls soccer team last week, but that didn't keep the Panthers from nailing two victories in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Panthers opened the week by making two first-half goals stand up for a 2-1 win over Piedmont Hills, and they finished up with a 1-0 victory over local rival Westmont.
Rachel Innes knocked in a first-half goal off an assist from Randi Gillespie to lift the Panthers to the win over Westmont on Friday. The win helped Prospect even its league record to 3-3 and improve its season mark to 6-7-1.
Earlier in the week, Gillespie and Jamie Ann Rodriguez each scored goals to lead the Panthers to the 2-1 win over the Pirates. Prospect opened up a 2-0 lead in the first half, then held off the Bucs, who could manage just a single goal in the second half.
Westmont, 3-9-1 for the year and 0-5 in the division, had lost 5-0 to Leland earlier in the week, but the Warriors rolled to a
6-1 non-league win over Del Mar.
Sophomore midfielder Vanessa Tapia led the Warriors to the win over the Dons with three goals and an assist. Kristy Iyama knocked in a couple of goals, and Denise Picard had three assists.
Victoria Alexander also scored a goal in the win, and Johanna Publicover and Brianna Driggs each added assists.
Boys soccer
In boys soccer action last week, Westmont rolled to back-to-back wins over Piedmont Hills and San Jose to improve to 3-1 in West Valley Division play and to
6-3-2 for the year.
The Warriors rolled to a 6-1 win over Piedmont Hills before edging San Jose 2-1.
Prospect lost twice in the Santa Teresa Division, falling 6-1 to Branham and 4-1 to Oak Grove. The Panthers are 0-3 in the division and 1-9-1 for the year.
Girls basketball
Rachel Gellman tossed in 11 points, but Westmont lost 46-33 to Leland last week. Chipping in four points each were Jennifer Chaney, Rachelle Brady, Ashley Vierra and Ann Baumgardner.
The Warriors also lost 59-45 to Oak Grove last week, despite Gellman's
24-point effort. Gellman had a three among her seven field goals, and she hit eight points at the free-throw line.
Chaney supported with eight points for Westmont, Allyson Carrothers hit seven and Stacey Stenzel had four.
In the Santa Teresa Division, Prospect lost three games last week, falling 46-39 to Gunderson in overtime, 55-40 to Silver Creek and 54-46 to Independence.
Boys basketball
Danny Sisemore buried 14 points and Michael Bottenberg added 13 to lead the Westmont boys to a 57-40 win over Prospect in Santa Teresa Division play.
Bottenberg popped a pair of threes on his way to double figures, and Joel Lopez had a three among his two field goals and added five points at the free-throw line to finish with 10. Allen Iida added seven points, including a three.
Ryan Najima led the Panthers with 13 points. He had two threes among his three field goals, and he added five free throws. Fermen Smith had eight points, Ivan Biondic seven and Matt Herrera four.
Westmont dropped a 53-29 decision to Independence to open the week, despite a 10-point night by Bottenberg. The Warriors are now 2-2 in the division and 15-5 for the year.
Prospect slipped to 2-3 in the division and 8-10 for the year after the loss to the Warriors. The Panthers had opened the week with two losses, 60-45 to Independence and 60-39 to Leland.
Greg Hawkins topped the Panthers with 10 points, including two threes, in the loss to the 76ers. Smith added eight points, Kyle Bonvechio seven, Andrew Garduque six, Luis Arellano five, Najima three and Biondic and Steven Vidal two each.
Najima hit 12 points and Bonvechio added nine in the loss to the Chargers.
