Burke a Titan

Former Olympic hammer thrower Ed Burke of Los Gatos will be one of those honored on Feb. 13 prior to the start of the 2003 Titan Games.

Olympic Titans to be honored at the "Titan Games Night of Champions" will be Burke, boxing great Evander Holyfield, Olympic wrestling gold medalist Dan Gable, six-time Olympic fencer Peter Westbrook, two-time gold medal­winning weightlifter Tommy Kono, judo star Mike Swain and tae kwon do superstar Steven Lopez.

The Titan Games will be held at the San José State University Events Center and will run Feb. 13­15. The format is the USA vs. the world.

The VIP event to honor the former Olympians will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, with the first round of the Titan Games to begin at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $90 for both events. General admission tickets for the competition only are $24 and $28. Tickets can be purchased at the event center ticket office at San José State University or at www.ticketmaster.com and local Ticketmaster locations.

Athletes will compete in weightlifting, boxing, fencing, the shot put, wrestling, judo, tae kwon do and karate in the competition.


Soccer tryouts

Soccer tryouts for girls under-12 and 13-, 14- and 15-year-old teams and a boys and girls under-11 team will be held Feb. 15, 9­10:30 a.m. each day, at Del Mar High School. Professional training will be provided by Jorge Espinoza. For more information, call Valerie at 408.810.3539.

Strikers tryouts

The West Valley Strikers, a boys Class 1 soccer team, will hold tryouts on Feb. 15 for the fall 2003 season. Boys born after August of 1990 are eligible. For more information, call Shannon Impey at 408.353.2461.


All-comer meets

Los Gatos will host all-comer track and field meets each Saturday through March 1 at the high school track. Field events begin at 12:30 p.m., and running events start at 1 p.m. The fee is $3 per athlete for unlimited events and $2 for spectators. Soccer scholarships

TeamUSA/Youth is accepting nominations from soccer coaches for its youth soccer scholarship program. Scholarships, ranging from $400 to $2,000, provide young players the opportunity to play internationally.

To nominate players, coaches should visit www.ussport.us/scholarship. Eligible players must have been born between 1984 and 1990. Nominated players must complete an essay to be considered. The nomination deadline is Feb. 17, and awards will be announced on Feb. 21.
