Westmont gives top-seeded Leland a tough time in playoffs

The Westmont Warriors had their work cut out for them.

Westmont had just finished an outstanding season in the Blossom Valley Athletic League's West Valley Division, but the Warriors were to open the Central Coast Section Division I boys soccer playoffs against the No. 1 seed—Leland.

The Chargers had won the championship in the BVAL's rugged Mt. Hamilton Division, and they took a lofty 24-0-2 record into the postseason.

Leland figured to make short work of No. 16 seed Westmont, successful for the year but in a lower division of the BVAL. The Warriors, it seems, had other ideas.

Westmont gave Leland fits in the first round of the CCS tournament, taking a 1-1 tie into the halftime break before losing a 2-1 heartbreaker.

A first-half goal by Suad Arnautovic off an assist from Matt Schembri tied the game 1-1, but Leland scored late in the game to snap the deadlock and pull out the win.

Westmont finished the season with a 14-4-2 record. Arnautovic was the club's leading scorer with Javier Barajas another offensive standout for the Warriors. Goalkeeper Fernando Jacquez and sweeper Justin Mitchell were defensive stars for Westmont.
