Dean Antolin of Westmont had an impressive two-day showing at the Central Coast Section wrestling tournament held Feb. 2122 at Independence. But he came up just short of winning a trip to the state tournament in Stockton.
Antolin placed fourth at 189 pounds. The Westmont senior opened CCS with back-to-back pins after getting a first-round bye. Antolin won by fall at 2:33 against Andy Armstrong of Bellarmine, then pinned Jared Jenkins of Santa Cruz with eight seconds left to wrestle.
He ran into No. 1 seed Ben Reynolds of Cupertino a match later and was pinned but fought back to beat Kevin Roy of St. Francis 5-4 to keep his hope of a state-qualifying finish alive. But the talented Westmont wrestler was pinned in the second round in the match for third place. Elias Castillo of Silver Creek took the third and final state berth and Antolin ended up in fourth place.
Hiep Dinh, Ryan Kennedy, Tyler Porras and Brad Turner were other Westmont wrestlers who qualified for the CCS tournament.
Dinh lost two matches at 152 pounds, dropping a tight 10-8 decision to Justin Harrigan of Bellarmine in the first round and losing 5-1 to Juan Magana of North Salinas in his second match.
Porras lost by fall in his first bout at 275 pounds, but he came back to pin Tito Flores of San Benito 30 seconds into the third round. He lost his next match to Tony Matteucci of South San Francisco to drop out the tourney.
Kennedy lost two straight bouts at 160 pounds to face elimination and Turner qualified for CCS at 145 pounds but did not compete.
Saratoga's Brent Walter led a contingent of five Falcons to the CCS tournament.
Walter, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League champion at 189 pounds, opened CCS by pinning Keith Baggett with 19 seconds left in the first round. After a loss to Kevin Roy of St. Francis, Walter pinned Ryan Dunn of San Benito at 3:19 of the second round. Saratoga's super sophomore defeated Peter Esquivel of Independence 3-0 and Tommy Staats of Fremont 7-2 before losing to Silver Creek's Castillo.
Jarrod Usher (125), Scott Hsu (130), Matt Chabrier (145) and Greg Van Hoesen (215) were other Falcons who qualified for CCS.
Usher lost 7-0 to Richard Delfin of Aptos in his first match before beating Ishmael Mariscla of Live Oak 5-2. But Usher lost 9-2 to Frankie Elias of Soledad to face elimination.
Van Hoesen drew a first-round bye before losing to Andrew Reese of Cupertino. The powerful Saratoga senior came back to pin Overfelt's Victor Espericue 20 seconds into the second round before losing a tough 8-2 decision to Jose Abbron of Gilroy.
Hsu and Chabrier each lost two straight matches at CCS.
Lynbrook's Josh Wang (103), Eugene Berson (130) and Chris Wong (135) also competed at the section tournament. All three Vikings were eliminated with two straight losses.
