Council recognizes
colon cancer month
Saratoga City Council members granted the American Cancer Society's request to recognize March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month at their March 5 meeting. According to the foundation, colon cancer is the third most common cancer that affects men and women equally. The disease is 90 percent preventable with the timely use of existing colorectal cancer screening tests. The foundation anticipates that 700 cases will be diagnosed in Santa Clara County and that, of that number, approximately 240 people will eventually die from the disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that only 40 percent of county residents get screened and is urging adults over the age of 50 to discuss screening options with their physicians. For more information, call the cancer society's local office at 408.688.0127 or visit www.cancer.org.
Volunteers needed
to help library
The Saratoga Library is looking for volunteers ages 13 and up to help move books and materials to its new building. The work may be physically demanding and requires attention to detail. Those interested must pick up applications at the reference desk in the library. Applications will also be available at the Book-Go-Round building and at local schools, including Saratoga and Prospect high schools.
Volunteers can choose from one- to two-hour shifts in the morning or afternoon. An exact date for the event has not yet been determined, but applicants are strongly advised to respond as soon as possible. The library has signed up more than 100 volunteers thus far. For more information, contact Diana Colby at 408.867.6126.
