K­8 registration started April 1

The Saratoga Union School District is now accepting registration for new, incoming K-8 students for the 2003­04 school year. New students with siblings already enrolled in the district are encouraged to register before May 16. A lottery will be held if specific grade and class requests exceed the space available.

Registration packets are at the district office, 20460 Forrest Hills Drive; each elementary school also has registration packets for kindergarten and first grade. For more information, call Loree Ferla at 408.867.3424, ext. 200.


Saratogan's boat design wins honors

Gordon Wong, a resident of Saratoga, recently won a cardboard boat regatta at his school, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Wong, a junior majoring in architecture, built a boat out of two 4-foot-by-6-foot sheets of corrugated cardboard. Wong paddled one lap of the school's regatta course in two heats and a final round and beat the second-place winner by a half-second. First-place awards included a trophy and a cash prize. Wong graduated from Saratoga High School in 2000.


Creative writing contest for locals

Insight Prep Centers is looking for local high school students to enter its creative writing contest, called "Musings of the Mind's Eye." Students are encouraged to write short stories, no longer than 1,500 words, on the theme of "vision." Entries must be received by April 15; winners will be honored at a May 27 reception. Resident makes fall dean's list

Lucia Sueltz is on the fall semester 2002 dean's list at Muhlenberg College, where she is a senior. Sueltz earned a grade point average of more than 3.5 during the semester. Sueltz, the daughter of Saratoga residents Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Sueltz, is double majoring in philosophy/political thought and religion at the Allentown, Penn., school. She is the news editor for the school newspaper and is involved with the College Democrats. Sueltz graduated from the Wooster School in Connecticut.
