Bulldog Benhke tosses Falcons to win

There wasn't much offense for the Saratoga baseball team last week in its game against Mountain View. But as far as pitchers Brett Behnke and Chris Hornberger were concerned, it was just enough.

Saratoga had just two hits and scored just three runs, but Behnke and Hornberger made that stand up for a 3-2 win in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Falcons staked Behnke to a 3-0 lead with a three-run rally in the third, and the right-hander was able to hold on with a bulldog effort. The Spartans picked up single runs in the fourth and sixth, but that was as close as Mountain View would get. Hornberger came on late to pick up the save for the Falcons. The two hurlers scattered 10 hits in the game.

Brett Granum ripped a double to account for one of the two Saratoga hits in the win.

Saratoga's record was evened at 3-3 a couple of days later when the Falcons lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Homestead.

Jon Anderson was the hitting star for the Falcons with two doubles and a single to drive in three runs. Phil Spencer also doubled for Saratoga.

The Falcons led 4-1 after two innings, but the Mustangs tied it with three runs in the third. Homestead went up 6-4 with a couple of runs in the fifth, but Saratoga fought back with two in the top of the seventh to tie it 6-6. The Mustangs scored the game winner in the bottom of the inning, though, to end the game.

Saratoga, 6-7 for the year, will get another shot at the Mustangs this week. The Falcons were to host Monta Vista on April 1, and they will entertain Homestead on April 5 at noon. Saratoga will visit Lynbrook on April 8 at 3:30 p.m.

Westmont wins

Ricky Meinhold came through at the plate and on the mound to lead the Westmont baseball team to a lopsided 9-2 win over Piedmont Hills in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week.

Meinhold was the winning pitcher, pushing his mound record to 4-0, and also ripped a pair of doubles to lead an 11-hit Westmont assault in the win. The Warriors held Piedmont to just five hits.

Westmont rallied for four in the second to take Meinhold to a 4-0 lead, then added five in the fifth to make it 9-0. Piedmont Hills answered with two in the bottom of the fifth, but it was too little too late.

Brad Davis and Mitch Monroe knocked in three runs apiece for the Warriors, and Josh Herzbrun had two hits to plate a pair of runs. Mike Gorski and Mike Sato also had two hits apiece.

The Warriors improved to 6-1 in league play with the win.

Prospect lost in its only outing last week, dropping a 7-4 Mt. Hamilton Division decision to Leigh.

Aaron Jacks ripped two hits to lead the seven-hit attack for the Panthers. Ted Piggins and Steven Vidal each doubled, and Kyle Bonvechio, Casey Juull and Greg Ramirez each singled. Joey Puccinelli knocked in a run with a ground ball.

Jacks and Vidal tossed three innings apiece in the game. Jacks struck out five in his stint.

The Panthers, 1-5 in the division and 4-8 for the year, faced a bye on Friday and played host to Mt. Pleasant on Monday. They will visit Oak Grove on April 2 and Leland on April 4 in a couple of 3:30 p.m. games.

The Saratoga boys volleyball team lost twice last week to De Anza Division leaders, falling to Homestead and Los Gatos.

The Falcons lost three straight to the Wildcats, losing 15-7, 15-0, 15-7. But Saratoga gave the Mustangs all they could handle, taking the best of five match to its limit before losing.

The Falcons lost a heartbreaker to Homestead, falling 12-15, 15-8, 11-15, 16-14, 15-13.

Los Gatos is 4-0 in the division, and Homestead is 2-1.
