The Great Race

The starting gun will blast at 9 a.m. in Saratoga on Sunday for the annual running of the Great Race, and for the 18th straight year it will be the race sponsor, the Los Gatos Rotary Club, firing the pistol.

More than 2,500 runners are expected to take part in the April 6 run, which stretches four miles up Highway 9 from Saratoga to Los Gatos.

The entry fee is $30 on race day, and all entrants receive a T-shirt.


Lamble wins

Redwood Middle School student Kelly Lamble won the singles title in the West Lane Tennis Tournament held March 15­16 and 22­23 in Stockton. The Saratoga tennis star was the No. 1 seed in the 40-player singles field.


Soccer tryouts

A girls under-14/under-15 Class 1 soccer team in the De Anza League will hold tryouts each Tuesday and Thursday at Jollyman Park in Cupertino. The team is coached by Los Altos High School coach Roberto Magellan, who played college soccer at the University of San Francisco. Golf tourney

Members of the San Jose Earthquakes, CyberRays and Sharks will be in the field at the first celebrity Silicon Valley Futbol Club Golf Tournament on April 28 at the newly opened Boulder Ridge Country Club in San Jose.

Landon Donovan, Brandi Chastain, Jeff Agoos, Joe Cannon, Teemu Selanne and Vincent Damphousse are among the pro athletes expected to take part in the tourney, which will raise funds for player scholarships, equipment, travel and uniforms for the club.

The entry fee of $160 includes golf, a cart for two, a Texas barbecue and more. The shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Registration is open through April 15. For more information, visit www.svfc.us or call 408.252.4160.
