Jane Eyre: Victorian novel now a musical romance
By Estelle Pagnoux
Transforming Jane Eyre into a musical may sound like a stretch to those familiar with Charlotte Bronte's classic tale of a young orphan in Victorian England. However, in the hands of John Caird, the co-creator of the Broadway hit Les Misérables, and songwriter Paul Gordon, the high school English class must-read becomes a wildly successful musical romance for the stage.

TheatreWorks will wrap up its 33rd season with the Northern California premiere of the Broadway musical Jane Eyre April 9May 4 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts at 500 Castro St. in Mountain View.

Young Jane spends her childhood tormented by her only living relatives. Finally sent to live under the tyranny of a schoolmaster, she remains convinced that her life surely holds a silver lining. As a governess at the Thornfield Mansion, Jane finds fulfillment and companionship in an unlikely place, falling in love with her mysterious employer, Edward Rochester.

Nominated for five Tony Awards, Jane Eyre weaves a romantic tale showing the power of a spirit unbroken.

Tickets are $20$45. Call 650.903.6000 or visit www.theatreworks.org for more information.
