Prospect honored in poetry contest

Six members of Prospect High School's Spanish poetry recitation team earned awards in the annual county Spanish poetry declaration contest. At the March 26 competition, the 10-member team memorized and recited poems in Spanish and were rated by five judges on delivery—gestures, intonation and pronunciation.

Jen S. Brown placed third in the Spanish 1 category; Maria Gordienko placed third in Spanish 2; Mikhail Gordienko was third for Spanish 3; Elizabeth Amstutz earned second-place honors in Spanish 4 A.P.; and James Hong and Chris Okano were second and third in Spanish 5 A.P. The team was led by Spanish teachers Carol Crane and Dee Hammer.


Argonaut walks in fundraiser

"Fill the Community Chest" is the theme of the April 11 walkaround at Argonaut Elementary School. All students will walk for one hour at the event, which aims to raise $20 per child and continues to look for sponsors. Funds raised will help pay for landscaping, more picnic tables and umbrellas, a portable sound system and general maintenance of the school. Argonaut is also looking for parent volunteers to help out with the event. Those with questions can call 408.996.2156 or 408.741.8501.


Saratogan abroad studying language

Joanne Sprague, who graduated from Saratoga High School in 2000, is in France as part of Dartmouth College's Language Study Abroad program. Sprague, a math major, is in Lyon studying French.

Active in a sorority and women's rugby, Sprague will spend the winter 2003 term in France. While at Saratoga High, Sprague was active in community service and girls softball. She is the daughter of Robert and Lynn Sprague and is a member of the Dartmouth class of 2004.

Dartmouth College is in New Hampshire and has an enrollment of 4,200 undergraduates. According to the school, 65 percent of those undergrads participate in foreign study programs.
