Ray Joe Swanson died March 28 due to complications from pneumonia and heart failure. He was 87.
Swanson was born on April 10, 1916, in Hemmingford, Neb. He graduated from Modesto High School in 1934, where he was an Eagle Scout, belonged to a glider club and studied airplane engine mechanics. He attended Modesto Junior College for four years, studying business administration and pharmacy with the intention of becoming a pharmacist.
However, in 1940 he qualified as seaman second class in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was soon off for training throughout the United States. He was a World War II fighter pilot from January through December of 1944. He logged 300 hours of combat air strikes and was awarded several medals. After World War II, Swanson continued to serve and lived in numerous cities, from Oakland to Quonset Point, R.I.
In 1965 Swanson moved to Saratoga, where he served at Moffett Field Naval Air Station until he retired as a commander in 1968.
After his retirement, Swanson kept busy as a real estate agent and broker in Saratoga. He received an associate degree in real estate from West Valley College in 1978 and opened his own office in Los Gatos and then in Saratoga Village.
He was very active in the community and was a member and past president of the Saratoga Lions Club. Swanson received an achievement award in recognition of his leadership and devoted service to the Lions Club. In addition to community service, he was known for his love of horse racing and electronic games.
Swanson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Swanson; brother Clair George Swanson; daughters Shirlee McKibbin of Sacramento, Sandra Haynes of Hayward, and Sue Fox of Livermore; son Richard Swanson of Antioch; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
