Prospect's Bonvechio drives in game winner
By Dick Sparrer
It wasn't the hardest ball Kyle Bonvechio has hit this year. But when the Prospect senior dropped a base hit behind third base in last week's Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game against Leigh, it was enough to lift the Panthers to a thrilling 1-0 victory.

Of course, Bonvechio did more than just drive in the game-winning run in the Wednesday game—he also flipped a masterful four-hit shutout to lead the Panthers to the win over the Longhorns.

Bonvechio struck out three and walked no one as he scattered the four Leigh hits on the road to the victory, his third in five decisions this season.

The Prospect win was something of an upset, considering the fact that Leigh (9-2-1 in league and 15-4-1 for the year) is contending for the division championship and Prospect (3-9 in league, 6-12 overall) is battling to stay out of the league cellar.

But last week, Bonvechio and company played like champions against the Longhorns. And the Panthers made a single run in the sixth stand up for a 1-0 win.

Ted Piggins ripped a two-out single in the sixth and moved to second on a passed ball. He was running on the crack of the bat when Bonvechio lifted a shot pop just over third base and out of the reach of the diving Leigh shortstop. Piggins scored from second on the play, and that was all Bonvechio needed.

The right-hander was greeted by a Leigh double in the top of the seventh, and a passed ball moved the potential tying run to third. But Leigh attempted a suicide squeeze in an effort to knot the score, and when the batter missed the bunt attempt, the runner was tagged out in a rundown. Bonvechio went on to retire the side to preserve the victory.

Prospect supported Bonvechio with just four hits in the game. In addition to the two singles in the sixth, Joey Puccinelli and Greg Ramirez also singled for the Panthers.

Prospect takes a break from league play this week but will take part in the rugged West Coast Classic.

Warriors split

Brian Gellman tossed the Westmont baseball team to a tight 6-5 win over Pacific Grove last week, but the Warriors could manage just a split in the North County Classic tournament.

Mike Sato singled and doubled and Mike Gorski knocked in two runs to lead the Warriors to the win over Pacific Grove. Mitch Monroe also doubled in the Westmont win.

Gellman was the winning pitcher for the Warriors, pushing his record to 2-1. Westmont allowed Pacific Grove just five hits and held on as Pacific Grove battled from behind in the late innings.

Westmont opened up an early 3-0 cushion but was clinging to just a 4-3 lead after four innings. The Warriors scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-3, then held on as Pacific Grove picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Westmont slipped to 12-5 for the year later in the week after suffering a 12-2 loss to Monterey in tournament play. Monterey led just 3-2 after two innings but then rallied for three in the fourth and six in the fifth to win it in five innings.

Monroe knocked in both Westmont runs in the game, and Jimmy Stevenson doubled.

Falcons win title

The Saratoga baseball team won three out of four games last week to take the consolation championship in the Peninsula Easter Classic at North Monterey County High School.

The Falcons closed out the tourney with a 13-4 win over Monterey to clinch the consolation crown. Saratoga had beaten Carmel 11-6 and Los Altos 5-4 earlier in the tourney before losing 15-5 to host North Monterey County, who ended up losing 5-4 to Castro Valley in the championship game.

Brett Granum singled and tripled to drive in two runs, and Jay New singled and doubled to plate a pair and lead the Falcons to the win over Monterey. Buck Wright also had two hits for Saratoga, and Brian Sato doubled.

Ryan Newberry was the winning pitcher as the Falcons held Monterey to just six hits in the game.

Saratoga jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first, but Monterey chipped away to tie it 4-4 by the fifth. The Falcons grabbed the lead with two in the sixth, then put the game away with a seven-run rally in the seventh.

The Falcons improved to 12-10 for the year with the win, while the Toreadors dropped to 17-8.

Saratoga had opened the tourney with the 11-6 win over Carmel. It was another upset for the Falcons; the loss dropped Carmel to 19-5 for the year.

Granum blasted a home run for Saratoga and Chris Hornberger singled twice to drive home a pair of runs. Hornberger was also the winning pitcher for the Falcons.

New doubled home two runs in the win, and Newberry and Jon Anderson slapped two hits apiece. Wright also belted a double.

Carmel jumped in front 1-0 in the first, but the Falcons picked up three in the second. Carmel answered with three in the top of the third; then Saratoga tied it with a run in the bottom of the frame. Carmel went back on top with a run in the fifth, but Saratoga put the game away with six in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Rothenberg doubled and singled twice and Wright drove in three runs to spark the Falcons to a tight 5-4 win over Los Altos a game later. Anderson also doubled in the win.

The Falcons had to hang on for this win. They led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles picked up a run, then added two in the seventh to make it close.

Anderson doubled twice and Newberry had two hits to drive in two runs, but the Falcons lost 15-5 to North Monterey County. Granum also doubled for Saratoga.

The Falcons were leading 4-2 after three, but North Monterey broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth.

Saratoga was to return to league play this week, hosting Mountain View on April 22 before heading to Los Altos on April 24, 3:30 p.m.

Follmar wins

Saratoga's Alicia Follmar won one event and placed in another at the HamptonPhillips Classic track and field meet held last Saturday at San José City College.

Follmar raced to win the 1,600-meter run in 4:58.74. She was also fourth in the 800 meters at 2:16.96.

Two Saratoga boys nailed fifth place at the meet. Will Allehouse was fifth in the 400 meters in 50.92, and Scott Osborne was fifth in the triple jump at 40-11/2.

Warriors fall

The Westmont girls softball team lost a 5-1 decision to Carlmont in pool play in the Watsonville Tournament last weekend. Sophomore Allison Carrothers had two of Westmont's three hits in the loss.

Westmont was to visit Leigh for a Mt. Hamilton Division game on April 22 and will be back in action in Watsonville on
April 26.
