Saratoga will be waving hello to Bye Bye Birdie this weekend when Saratoga Elementary School students put on a production for the community.

The annual spring musical has two shows—May 2 and 3, 7:30 p.m., in the school's auditorium. Thirty students and 10 parents are in the cast of the show, put together by the Saratoga School Clubhouse, the after-school program for Saratoga Elementary.

"The music is toe-tapping and singalong," said Joanne Maloney, co-director of the production and daycare director. "It's a fun show."

Co-director Lisa Burich, a parent volunteer, said Bye Bye Birdie was chosen after the students put on Grease last year. "Most kids in the school seem to be really crazy about the '50s," Burich said. "It just seems like a nice period in history." Burich said the students are interested in the concept of malt shops, leather jackets and poodle skirts.

According to Maloney, the cast this year is especially young, with a great many kindergartners and students who have never been in a musical previously.

"They're speaking, singing, dancing. A lot of these kids have never had the experience before. This is their first experience," Maloney said.

But because the group has been rehearsing once a week since October, "there's been a lot of growth that I've seen," Maloney said. "Some kids might be the shyest kids in the world, but they're not shy when they're up there."
