The upcoming soccer match between the San Jose CyberRays and the Carolina Courage will be more than just a game—it will be a day of both commemoration and recognition for heroes in the community.
The May 10 match will be designated as the Lark and Roger Chastain Celebration Game in honor of team captain Brandi Chastain's late parents.
"Her mother was the ultimate soccer mom," said Gail Osborne, who is the community relations manager for the team. "She was always there for the players. She did everything for them and even cooked them dinner."
The Chastains will forever be in the hearts and minds of the players, but the star of the event will be a 9-year-old Saratoga resident who lost her ability to see and speak as a result of a rare illness called toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Kaitlyn Langstaff will not only get front row seats, she'll be out on the field, shaking hands with players from both teams as spectators watch and applaud. She'll also be tossing the coin to determine the starters of the game.
Langstaff, who is an inspiration to many, was chosen to be the honorary captain for the event.
"She has a remarkable story," said Obsborne. "It touched all of us. She's a great kid with a loving family."
The soccer team will also be hosting a pre-game soccer clinic from 3 to 5 p.m. in which youth ages 6 to 18 can learn the techniques of playing soccer. The team's coach will be leading the practice. All proceeds will be divided between the Silicon Valley Children's Hospital Foundation and Soccer for Hope, which aids children with life-threatening diseases.
Following the two-hour session is another two hours of fun and games. Guests are invited to bring their own food for a tailgating celebration and enjoy activities such as face-painting and making posters. In addition, Miggs, the San Francisco rock band that turned a Langstaff poem into a song, will be playing in the Fan Zone. Langstaff will be signing autographs.
Osborne said that this is a way for the team to give back to the community.
"We're proud of her spirit and tenacity," said Kerry Langstaff, Kaitlyn's mother. "It's great that she's made it this far. We're thankful for all of the love and support we've been getting from the community."
Kerry said that Kaitlyn was surprised when she found out she was going to be the honorary captain.
"Brandi knows who I am?" asked Kaitlyn, according to Kerry.
Kerry said that just having her two daughters with her would be her Mother's Day gift.
The game will start at 7 p.m. at the Spartan Stadium, located at 1257 S. 10th St. in San Jose. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 408.260.3900.
