Gardner steered schools through rough waters

If I could draw as well as Mr. DeCinzo, I would draw a cartoon that saluted Superintendent Mary Gardner. Our superintendent bravely and successfully steered the Saratoga Union School District ship around horrendous obstacles floating on the sea of her administrative tenure. Not only did she not lose the ship, she enriched it with enhanced curriculum, new facilities, promotion of parent and teacher leadership, a $5 million Saratoga Education Foundation, and continued high test scores. Mr. DeCinzo's cartoon in the April 30 issue of the Saratoga News illustrated the sad fact that is facing all school districts in California and is the fault of a depressed economy and the budget priorities of our state and federal government.
