It's all over now ... well, not quite. The baseball season will continue for another week, but the championship race is over in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League—Westmont has seen to that.
The Warriors have one game left this week (they were to host Independence on May 13), but they have already wrapped up the division title, thanks to three victories last week.
Westmont handled Branham 8-3, edged Piedmont Hills 4-2 and whipped Pioneer 6-2 last week to improve to 16-1 in the division. The Warriors, 18-6 for the year, will now look forward to the upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Warriors, 8-18 a year ago, won their first title since 1998 with Jason Miller back handling the coaching reins after a year away from the program.
The return of Miller no doubt helped the Warriors, but so did the addition of transfer Ricky Meinhold. The junior hurler tossed a complete game against Branham last week to push his season mound record to 9-1.
Meinhold scattered six hits in tossing the Warriors to the win over the Bruins, but he was locked in a 2-2 tie through five innings before the Warriors unloaded for three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Bryan Adragna singled, doubled and homered to drive in three runs to lead the Warriors offensively in the win. Mike Gorski and Josh Herzbrun had two hits apiece in the game.
Westmont came back with a 4-2 win over Piedmont a couple of days later. Mike Sato was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 4-1, and he also helped his cause at the plate with a double to drive in two runs.
Gorski, Meinhold and Jimmy Stevenson ripped two hits each in the win and Brian Gellman cracked a double.
Westmont made it three straight for the week with the 6-2 win over Pioneer. Adragna tossed a complete game seven-hitter to get the mound win for the Warriors. He also singled and doubled in the game.
Brandon Simon led the Warriors with three hits and Herzbrun doubled twice. Brad Davis singled and doubled and Stevenson had two hits.
Wright slams Homestead
Buck Wright crushed a grand slam and Jon Anderson homered to lead the Saratoga baseball team to an 11-1 win over Homestead last week.
Anderson finished the day with four hits, including the homer and a double, to drive in five runs in the win. Phil Spencer and Stephen Azzi each doubled and Brett Behnke ripped two hits.
Behnke also went the distance on the hill to toss a five-hitter for the Falcons. He pushed his mound record to 6-1 with the win.
But the Falcons lost 9-2 to Los Altos and 2-1 to Santa Clara later in the week. Jay New doubled and Ryan Newberry had two hits in the loss to the Eagles, and Chris Hornberger had two hits in the loss to the Bruins.
Kerin wins, Falcons fall
A.J. Kerin won twice at No. 1 singles in the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs, but the Saratoga tennis team could manage just a split.
Kerin's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 started the Falcons on the road to a 5-2 win over Pinewood in the CCS opener, but the Falcons lost 4-3 to Menlo School a match later to face elimination. Kerin won 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 against Menlo.
Panthers deck Cards
The Prospect baseball team edged Mt. Pleasant 4-3, but then lost 6-1 to Oak Grove and 10-1 to Leland to slip to 4-11 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and to 8-16 for the year.
The losses did little, though, to tarnish the thrilling win over the Cardinals.
The Panthers broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth, and held on from there to claim the victory.
Steve Vidal tossed a complete game seven-hitter to lead Prospect to the win. He struck out just one but walked only two.
Prospect led most of the game, but the Cards tied it with a run in the fifth. The Panthers came right back, though.
Vidal walked to open the sixth and Tony Puccinelli chased him to third with a double. Nick Sandoval lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Vidal and sent pinch runner Scott Skinner to third. Casey Juull then dropped a bunt and Skinner raced home on the suicide squeeze.
The Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but Vidal shut them down in the seventh to clinch the win.
Prospect scored first in the game when Ted Piggins walked, Aaron Jacks singled and Vidal doubled home a run.
Mt. Pleasant tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Prospect regained the lead with a run in the second. Sandoval tripled and came home on a single by Juull.
That's how it remained until Mt. Pleasant tied it in the fifth.
Jacks finished the day with two hits, the single in the first and a double in the third.
Prospect had little success against Oak Grove last week, scoring just a run on six hits. Greg Ramirez doubled and Juull, Vidal, Jacks, Skinner and Steven Kong each singled.
It was more of the same against Leland two days later. The Panthers could manage just a run on five hits. Piggins, Vidal, Joey Puccinelli, Juull and Jacks each singled in the game.
