Community honors turnaround teens
Ten students from Saratoga and Los Gatos high schools and the NOVA program will be honored at the Kiwanis Club's annual Turnaround Scholarship presentation event on May 22. Each of the students, who will receive $1,000 from the club, had high school careers that did not start off well but managed to turn themselves around, said Los Gatos High Principal Trudy McCulloch.
The students will share their stories, and one of last year's scholarship recipients will speak at the luncheon, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Los Gatos Lodge. The cost is $20. To RSVP, call McCulloch at 408.354.2730, ext. 212.
Resident receives B of A scholarship
Emily Fletcher, a Saratoga resident, is among the area high school seniors who recently received Bank of America Achievement Awards. Fletcher, who attends Saratoga High School, was awarded a $500 scholarship for her work in the liberal arts.
Bank of America selected 31 students in the San Jose area and named them outstanding seniors in the areas of applied arts, fine arts, liberal arts and science and math.
Saratoga school hosts 'Gong Show'
Saratoga Elementary School's annual talent show, "The Saratoga Gong Show 2003," has two performances on May 28. In the show, about 270 students will be performing acts in music, dancing, martial arts, comedy and magic. Parents and school staff will also have performances, which will be "gonged" by a panel of fifth-grade "celebrity" judges, said director Tiffany Borgia. The free shows are at 8:45 a.m.—for students and staff—and 7 p.m. for family and friends.
