The spring season has ended for area baseball and softball teams. And for two teams from Westmont High School, that season ended two rounds into the Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Westmont baseball team opened the CCS Division II playoffs with a tight 4-3 eight-inning win over Mountain View (21-7), but the Warriors lost in the CCS quarterfinals 4-2 to Monterey (25-9) to face elimination from postseason play.
Monterey had opened the playoffs with an 8-1 win over Saratoga (18-13) and the Toreadors will now face Leland (24-3) in the CCS semifinals on May 29, 7 p.m., at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The championship game is set for May 31 at Muni.
Westmont finished the season with a solid 20-7 record that included a championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Westmont girls softball team, meanwhile, opened CCS Division II play with a 3-1 win over Mountain View (17-13), but lost 3-1 to top-seeded Mitty (29-2) in the quarterfinals. The Monarchs will now face Burlingame (21-8) in the semifinals on May 27, 7 p.m., at San Jose PAL Stadium. The championship game is set for May 31, 3 p.m., at PAL.
The Warriors finished up the year with a 12-16 record after qualifying for the playoffs with a solid showing in the BVAL's tough Mt. Hamilton Division.
Sophomore Rachel Gellman ripped a couple of hits and soph hurler Breanna Kuhny tossed a three-hitter to lead the Westmont girls to the win over Mountain View to open the playoffs.
The Spartans took the early lead with a run in the first, but the Warriors scored two in the third to take the lead and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Kuhny tossed a five-hitter but was tagged with the tough loss in the 3-1 setback against Mitty on Saturday. Kuhny finished the year with a solid 10-6 pitching record.
Kuhny singled and tripled and senior catcher Michelle Salmiery ripped a double, but Westmont could manage just four hits in the loss.
