Strength camp for high school athletes at Saratoga

The Saratoga Athletic Boosters will host two strength training classes to teach high school athletes about weight training, conditioning, flexibility, plyometrics, agility and speed training. All athletes are welcome to join the classes, which will be conducted by Saratoga football coaches Kurt Heinrich, Kevin Tanner, Kyle Goñi and James Samuels.

The cost is $170, and enrollment will be limited to approximately 50 athletes in each of the two classes. An advanced class aimed at varsity level athletes familiar with training procedures will run Mondays through Fridays, 3:15­5:15 p.m., from June 23 through Aug. 8. A beginner's class for frosh-soph athletes will run Mondays through Fridays, 1­3 p.m., from June 23 through Aug. 8.

'Make Me A Pro'

The City of Saratoga Recreation Department will host a multi-sports camps for students ages 5­14 from June 30 through July 3, 12:30­3:30 p.m. A baseball camp (June 30­July 3, 9 a.m.­noon), flag football camp (Aug. 4­8, 12:30­3:30 p.m.), soccer camp (July 14­18 or Aug. 4­8, 9 a.m.­noon) and cheerleading camp (Aug. 4­8, 12:30­3:30 p.m.) will also be offered for students ages 7­14.

Basketball camp

The annual West Valley Basketball Camp returns to the college's Saratoga campus this summer with three sessions for boys entering the third through ninth grades.

The sessions include: boys in the fifth through seventh grades—June 16­20, 9 a.m.­3 p.m. each day, cost $325; boys in the seventh through ninth grades—June 23­27, 9 a.m.­3 p.m. each day, cost $325; and boys in the third through fifth grades—June 30­July 3, 9 a.m.­3 p.m. each day, cost $260.

Officials needed

The Fermar Corporation is looking for high school sports officials for the upcoming fall season. Officials are needed for football, field hockey, soccer, girls volleyball and water polo.

Fermar, which has been providing officials for high school athletic events in the Santa Clara Valley since 1977, will hold meetings and clinics for those men and women interested in becoming officials. Training sessions will begin in June and July and will continue through the fall season.

Officials earn between $25 and $55 per game, depending upon the sport and level of competition (varsity, junior varsity, freshman), and also have the opportunity to work youth and adult sports leagues in the area.

No experience is necessary, though knowledge of the sport a prospective official wishes to work is important. Officials also work at their own schedule.

Women's golf

The 61st annual Santa Clara County Women's Golf Championships will return to the area on Aug. 4­5 when tournament play gets under way at the San Jose Country Club.
The tourney attracts county's top women golfers, boasting the lower handicaps. Women who hold a valid golf index and either live in Santa Clara County or belong to a golf club in the county are eligible.

Soccer sign-ups

Saratoga AYSO Region 27 will hold soccer registration for the fall season on June 14, 10 a.m.­noon, at Argonaut Elementary School. Boys and girls ages 5­18 (as of Dec. 31) are eligible.

AYSO soccer emphasizes five philosophies: everyone plays, balanced teams, open registration, positive coaching and good sportsmanship.


Learn to row

The Los Gatos Rowing Club will host a learn to row class on June 7­8 and June 14­15. The class, to be held at the Los Gatos Rowing Club boathouse at the Lexington Reservoir, teaches the fundamentals of rowing. The cost is $250.
