The Joseph George Wine shop in Willow Glen was the setting June 1 for the first of a two-stage fundraiser featuring wine, food and music, a benefit for the Healthy Kids Fund, the comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance program that provides coverage for eligible children at low or no cost to families. The afternoon concluded at Thomas Fogerty Winery on Skyline Boulevard in Woodside.

Thanks for 'charity ball'
|
Photographs by David Weir
First came the announcement that there would be no Silicon Valley Charity Ball this year because of the economy. But the board floated the idea of a fundraiser without the ball and managed to raise $300,000 for local charities (donations will be accepted until June 30). Then a planned "thank you" was almost cancelled because the venue—the new San Jose main library—wasn't ready. But the Capital Club came to the rescue and threw a thank you event, and a very good time was had by all.
