The Saraoga Recreation Department will hold weeklong camps in July for middle school students who want to further develop their public speaking and debate skills. Classes will be taught by college professors and high school debate coaches.

In the introduction to public speaking class, students will learn to improve their nonverbal speech skills such as voice dynamics and body language. In the debate class, instructors will be teaching students how to enhance their reasoning skills, increase persuasion and hone teamwork skills.

The debate courses take place from July 7 to 11 and the public speaking classes will begin on July 14. Both courses take place at Los Gatos High School. Each week of camp costs $295. To register, stop by the rec department, call 408.868.1248 or visit www.saratoga.ca.us/recreation.htm.


Commission is looking for artists

The Saratoga Arts Commission and the Saratoga Recreation Department are looking for local and nonlocal artists who would be interested in displaying or selling art pieces at their second annual Art in the Park Celebration scheduled for Sept. 27 at Wildwood Park.

Those interested in setting up an exhibit must be 18 or older and must belong to an art gallery or organization. Work in any form is accepted. Artists can bring as many pieces as space permits. Space is limited and will be allocated in order of response. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 12 to staff liaison Kim Saxton-Heinrichs. For more information, call 408.868.1248.


Library to hold special events

The Saratoga Library stages special events throughout the summer every Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. for children entering first grade and up. Events include magic shows, reptilian exhibits, demonstrations of international instruments and storytelling times. Awards for the summer reading club will be distributed on Aug. 13.
