It was quite a spring for the sports teams at Westmont High School. The Warriors won Blossom Valley Athletic League titles in four sports—girls and boys swimming, baseball and volleyball—and sent three teams to the Central Coast Section playoffs—baseball, softball and volleyball.
So when it came time to select the BVAL all-league teams, it was no surprise to find the Warriors reaping many of the awards.
In baseball, the awards seemed to play out just like the regular season did for Westmont. The Warriors, who finished 17-1 to win the Santa Teresa Division title by a whopping eight games, came away with the majority of all-league honors.
Jason Miller was named co-coach of the year along with Lincoln's Stuart Piraro. Infielder Mike Gorski was named league's most valuable player, and pitcher/outfielder Ricky Meinhold was named Junior of the Year. Mitch Monroe, Jimmy Stevenson and Brandon Simon all came away with all-league first team honors, and Josh Herzbrun and Brian Adragna were selected to the second team.
In the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, Prospect's Aaron Jacks was a first-team selection, and teammates Kyle Bonvechio and Ted Piggins made the second team.
Over in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, the Saratoga baseball team was rewarded for its depth around the diamond with four Falcons claiming all-league first team honors.
Catcher John Anderson, pitcher Bret Behnke, pitcher/first baseman Chris Hornberger and outfielder Buck Wright were named to the first team, while Bret Granum and Jeff Lyu made the second team. Ryan Newberry and Tyler Rothenberg received honorable mention spots to round out the Saratoga honorees.
Softball
The Saratoga softball team also earned its share of all-league selections in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL. Pitcher Melissa Oakes and pitcher-shortstop Nikki Franchi were named to the first team. Third baseman Rachel Fox and catcher Elyse Driscoll received second team honors, while outfielders Suzanne Lessack and Katie Reed were on the honorable mention list.
In the De Anza Division of the SCVAL, Lynbrook received several selections. Catcher Stacy Bolt and pitcher Tracy Motzny were named to the first team. Third baseman Angie Lin and center fielder Serina Robinson received second team honors. Honorable mention went to Katlyn Cleaveland and Jeanna Fratus.
Westmont girls received recognition for their efforts on the field in the BVAL's Mt. Hamilton Division.
Pitcher Breanna Kuhny was named Sophomore of the Year in the division, and she joined teammates Katherine Bamford, an infielder, and catcher Michelle Salmiery on the all-league first team. Outfielder Kyle Soden earned second team honors.
The Santa Teresa Division's second team included Prospect's J.J. Jansen.
Volleyball
Westmont continued its BVAL dominance in the spring sports with numerous Warriors selected to the all-league volleyball team in the Santa Teresa Division, including three special award winners.
Middle blocker Chris McGraw was named the league's most valuable player, and Peter Kim came away with Coach of the Year honors. Outside hitter Patrick Hipolito was named Senior of the Year
Setter Paul Meyers and outside hitter Chris Nguyen were selected to the first team and Warriors Will Worth and Andrew Chang received second team honors to round out the awards for the 8-0 league champs.
In the Mt. Hamilton Division, Prospect's Danny Okazaki was named Sophomore of the Year. Teammates Bryan Ronalter and Ryan Najima were all-League first team selections, and Adam Day earned a second team berth.
