San Jose Rep cooks up a summer special
By Heather Zimmerman
Many people have never heard of one of the greatest names in American blues music—although most have heard music she's written—but singer/songwriter Alberta Hunter was actually a blues legend twice over. In a sense, Hunter had two impressive music careers: one spanning her teens to middle years, and another launched when she was 82 years old (and so successful was she the second time around, it can scarcely be called a comeback but rather a second career).

In the 20-odd years she wasn't writing and performing, Hunter embarked on a second profession, providing distinguished service as a practical nurse—and at an age when most people retire.

In Cookin' at the Cookery: The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter, playwright Marion J. Caffey paints a portrait of the vibrant Hunter using the most powerful possible medium—her music. So no doubt, San José Repertory Theatre will be cookin' this summer when, on July 8, it opens the theater production of Caffey's biography.

Cookin' at the Cookery is a musical celebration of Hunter's life—and life in general. Accordingly, the San José Rep has planned some extra entertainment to match the show's festive mood. Each Saturday between the matinee and evening performances of Cookin', the company will stage a special barbecue lunch accompanied by live music. Also, the Rep will hold its summer fundraising gala, Blue Twilight, on July 12. Guests will enjoy an exclusive performance of Cookin' at the Cookery, a champagne reception and dining and dancing.

"Cookin' at the Cookery" runs July 8Aug. 3, with previews July 23 and July 56. Tickets are $26$66. Barbecues are held every Saturday; lunch is $12 per person. The Blue Twilight summer gala will be held July 12, 3 p.m.10 p.m. Call for ticket information. All events are held at the San José Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio, San Jose.
